On Aug. 10, 1628, Swedish King Gustavus Adolfus' new royal ship, named Vasa to honor Sweden's founding royal family, set sail from the quay below the Royal Palace on her maiden voyage in Stockholm harbor. A warship 225 feet long with masts 165 feet high and heavily armed with 64
large guns, on that day she was also magnificent with more than 700 gilded and painted sculptures and ornaments.
