Until 1997, the skyline of New Zealand’s largest city was a drab, unfocused admixture of old and new buildings, few of them architecturally inspired. But when the Sky Tower, the Southern Hemisphere’s tallest ediface, spiked up, up, up as the centerpiece of downtown, there was no dancing in the streets.

It was more like 1889, when Gustave Eiffel announced he was putting up a tower in Paris… but sans the threats “to leave the country until they take that dreadful thing down.”
