  Older’s First Law of International Travel is this: You don’t really know a place until you know how it tastes. On my first day in New Zealand — it was 1972, and my young family had just emigrated from New York — the taste was pathetic. At our first meal — a Chinese restaurant on Queen Street, Auckland’s main drag — the first thing the waiter did was slap a stack of white bread and butter on the table. White bread and butter in a Chinese restaurant? I took this as a bad sign.
