"Lake
Norman Reflections", Bill and Diana
Gleasner's hardcover book, published 2008 by Peninsula
Press. 12x9 horizonal format, 96 page, end sheets and jacket
with 151 images, photography by Bill Gleasner.
This is the story of Lake Norman, the largest
man-made lake in North Carolina. Thirty-four miles long and
with 520 miles of shoreline, it is part of a system of 11 lakes
and 13 hydro plants joined together in a 215-mile stretch
of the Catawba River once known as the most electrified river
valley on Earth. The fall-out has been tremendous - ranging
from fishing, sailing and watersports of every description
to sky rocketing real estate developments. (Yes, even in these
diffucult financial times). Lake Norman, completed in 1961,
has become a dynamic engine for economic growth and limitless
expansion. The lake, a major bedroom community for the metropolitan
area of Charlotte, has taken a struggling region of small
cotton and tobacco farms and helped transform it into the
New South.
